Alan grew up in the 1950’s & 60’s in Bayonne, New Jersey and migrated to South Florida shortly after entering the municipal bond business in 1973. He was drawn to bonds because he says, “I feel that Municipal bonds are honest, they do what they say they’re going to do.” By 1983 he had founded A.F. Best Securities, a municipal bond broker/dealer where he remained Chairman and CEO until its sale to a NY Stock Exchange firm in 1999. In 2002, a friendly competitor, familiar with Alan’s “vast experience and outsized personality” invited him be president of Herbert J Sims & Co, an 80 year old Municipal Bond Investment Banking firm. After 13 years with Sims, first as President and then President Emeritus, he took a position as the Managing Director of Aegis Capital’s Municipal Bond Department, adding another niche to the full service Firm.

He and his wife, Kerry are the parents of seven children – Danyelle, David, Dillon, Drew, Jeremy, Josh & Shane – and are still (anxiously) waiting for their first grandchild.

Alan is a self-described golf “lunatic”. If he’s not in the office or spending time with friends and family, you can likely find Alan on a golf course or driving range somewhere. If he’s not at one of his South Florida favorites -Boca Rio Golf Club & High Ridge Country Club- or his “home away from home” the beautiful Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland, he’s working his way through his “golf bucket list” at some of the most famous courses around the world.

Muni Bonds: Changing Landscape Calls For Active Management

4.01.2015 – In the municipal bond markets in years past, the case could be made for passive, “buy and hold” portfolio strategies where investors built a “ladder” of various maturities and pretty much forgot about them.
